The title to today’s post is not mine…it is the title of a letter to the editor of the Virginia News Leader in Staunton, Virginia. The letter starts out as follows:

In light of the recent allegations of a molestation of a 97-year-old woman at Living Waters Assisted Living in Fishersville, I feel compelled to write this letter. After the agonizing decision was made for my grandmother to go live in a nursing home/assisted living facility, Living Waters was chosen and much to our surprise she loved it. In 2007, we found out (not from Living Waters), a young man that had beat his grandmother to death with a baseball bat had been released from Western State. His new residence was at Living Waters in a room right beside my grandmother. Obviously this had to be some kind of mistake.

This letter comes fast on the heels of a report last week about a nurse’s aid taking nude photos of residents in a nursing home in Galax, Virginia.

My Question: Is the state of Virginia really looking after the health and safety of our elderly?
