After just writing my last blog titled, “Nursing Home Sued Over Blood Thinner,” we see another report about deadly medication errors in nursing homes.
This report comes from Minnesota where state investigators say a woman recovering from spine surgery died of a massive stroke in June after a nursing home in Faribault, Minn., failed to give her a medication (Lovenox) prescribed to prevent blood clots. The resident’s doctor’s order was incorrectly transcribed by a nurse at Faribault Commons Nursing and Rehabilitation, and the home did not have adequate checks to spot the error, its administrator acknowledged.
Why are medication errors so common? Why don’t nursing homes have policies and procedures in place which prevent the death of its residents due to medication errors?
Have you or someone you know experienced similar medication errors in our local nursing homes?
