My friends in med-school have always said the folks in surgery are gutsy, brave – a different breed. They would have to be in order to assume the level of stress and responsibility that surgery entails.
I will be the first to admit, that every surgery is a risk. There is no such thing as a risk free procedure.
Often times however, we see patients who are injured as a result of insufficient post-surgical care, not the surgery itself. We have represented many families in the last 3 years alone, who have had serious complications after surgery.
What are the possible problems that could occur post surgery?
- Compartment Syndrome (blood pressing on nerves)
- Infection at surgical site
- Medication Error (too much / too little blood thinner)
- Bowel / Bladder problems or infections
- Change in blood pressure
- Damage to muscles due to pressure or non-movement
- Fall requiring additional repair
It is important to be diligent after your surgery. Your care is now going to be provided mostly by nurses, not doctors. This means if the nurses do not recognize your change in condition, the doctors may never know about your problem.
