It is not an easy discussion, that is for sure – but it is even more difficult when your loved one is ill and perhaps facing terminal illness, etc.
Our suggestion – make the decisions now, when you are feeling great – so your family will not have to when they are coping with your illness or grieving your loss.
Things to think about:
—Medical Power of Attorney – who will make medical decisions on your behalf if you are unable?
—Will – what if your children cannot agree on who gets your treasured coin collection? Why cause them that stress – DECIDE NOW, and let them know!
—General Power of Attorney – only works when you are alive – but what if you need someone to request Medical records for you, or deposit something at the bank.
—What are your requests regarding burial, etc…?
—Autopsy? Awful subject to think about – do you have religious beliefs that prevent one? Mention to your family that you approve or not. We often have wrongful death cases where one would have been helpful, but the family wasn’t sure of their loved ones’ wishes.
They are certainly not easy decisions…. but better to think about them now.
