Upcoming Event: What You Need to Know About Virginia Nursing Homes

What can you do to prevent nursing home abuse and neglect?

There are certain red flags that the nursing home has not provided adequate care, including dehydration, pressure ulcers, falls, over-medication, and elopement. We advise families about potential legal action against the corporate nursing home chain that has created an environment where staff members were unable to provide appropriate care.

We’re also providing a free seminar on May 17 at the Roanoke Higher Education Center to help educate families about nursing home patient rights, signing admission documents, and choosing a facility.

Know Your Rights

Last year, we published a guide to choosing a nursing home with our book, A Consumer’s Guide to Long-Term Care Choices in Virginia. You will find the questions you need to ask before you admit a loved one to a skilled care facility.

Community Seminar

Next week, I will be speaking at the Roanoke Bar Association at its “You and the Law” series, which is free to the public:

May 17, 2012 (6:30 PM)

You and the Law:  Ten Things You Need to Know About Debt and Debt Relief
Malissa L. Giles, Esq. – Giles & Lambert, PC

You and the Law:  Ten Things You Need to Know About Long-Term Care and Nursing Homes
Lauren M. Ellerman, Esq. – Frith & Ellerman Law Firm, PC

It should be a great discussion and useful for anyone faced with the long term care questions of:

  • What legal documents are needed?
  • How do we pay?
  • What is the difference between assisted living and nursing home care?
  • How do we demand better care?

Information is power; power means better decisions; better decisions mean our loved ones are less likely to be victims of abuse or neglect at the hands of a health care provider. Call the Roanoke Bar Association at (540) 265-8111 to register for free.
