Gastric bypass surgery is the latest fad – but it is major surgery with the potential for major complications!
Gastric bypass surgery makes the stomach smaller and allows food to bypass part of the small intestine. You will feel full more quickly than when your stomach was its original size, which reduces the amount of food you eat and thus the calories consumed. Bypassing part of the intestine also results in fewer calories being absorbed. This leads to weight loss.
Charlie Weis, the well-known head football coach for the University of Notre Dame almost died 5 years ago as the result of complications from gastric bypass surgery performed in Boston at Massachusetts General Hospital. Soon after surgery, Weis suffered from excessive internal bleeding, septic shock, and respiratory distress. It was so bad Weis received the Catholic sacrament of last rites.
