Forgive the shadow. Forgive the bad picture. Read Rob Bell’s new book How to be Here.

And consider for yourself, and folks that you engage professionally and personally, do you want to hire a lawyer that is driven by personal success (maybe) or craft?

  • Craft is when you have profound sense of gratitude that you even get to do this job.
  • Craft is when you have a deep respect for the form and shape of what you’re doing.
  • Craft is when you see yourself as part of a long line of people who have done this kind of work
  • Craft is when you’re humbled because you know that no matter how many years you get to do this, there will always be room to learn and grow

Senator Tim Kaine told a group of Virginia Trial Lawyers today that the most he learned from 17 years of being a trial lawyer, he learned from his clients.

Amen.

Amen to work that makes you feel grateful that you get to help people.

Amen to work that you respect, and learn from and grow from.

Amen to work where you are humbled no matter how long you get to do it.

I love being an attorney in SW Virginia. I love getting to meet people and counsel them during a very difficult time, such as a medical malpractice case. I feel honored to do this work. I feel called to this craft.

Maybe, that matters to future clients. And if it doesn’t, that is ok too.
