An outbreak of some kind of illness (norovirus) has prompted one floor of the Emeritus at Crossing Point assisted living facility to shut down while the County Health Department investigates. At least 16 residents have become sick, including some who were hospitalized. The residents complained of having gastrointestinal problems, such as diarrhea, vomiting, and nausea.
The nursing home is located in Orlando, Florida but could be located in any state.
My Take: Nursing homes and assisted living facilities are “ripe” for these types of problems. The residents have multiple health problems and live in small and confined spaces. All nursing homes should have a registered nurse and physician trained to detect and treat infectious diseases. Unfortunately, the vast majority due not.
