Lauren and I have been blogging over the years that, in our opinion, “non-profit” nursing homes provide better care than “for-profit” nursing homes. Our experience tells us that non-profit nursing homes hire more nurses to care for the residents than do the for-profit nursing homes.
Do you know who is the biggest for-profit nursing home chain in Virginia? Give up? How about a company located right here in Roanoke, Medical Facilities of America? Never heard of them? That is because they trade under many…many different names. Here is a partial list of just some of MFA’s for-profit nursing homes located in Virginia:
Appomattox Healthcare Center – Appomattox, VA
Berkshire Health Care Center – Vinton, VA
Franklin Health Care Center – Rocky Mount, VA
Gretna Health Care Center – Gretna, VA
Lynchburg Health & Rehabilitation Center – Lynchburg, VA
Piney Forest Health Care Center – Danville, VA
Pulaski Health Care Center – Pulaski, VA
Raleigh Court Health Care Center – Roanoke, VA
Riverside Health Care Center – Danville, VA
Salem Health & Rehabilitation Center – Salem, VA
Stanleytown Health Care Center – Stanleytown, VA
Take a quick look at the Virginia Health Information web site and you will find that these 11 for-profit nursing homes owned by MFA had profits of over $10,537,000 in 2008…that is just under $1 million dollars per nursing home.
Wonder how good the care is at these “for-profit” nursing homes operated by Medical Facilities of America?
