I hate to over simplify the issue but if you are asked to sign a non-compete or non-solicitation contract as a part of a new job, don’t.  More precisely, do not sign a non-compete or non-solicitation contract without reviewing the contract, and its potential impact on your future and your ability to earn a living, with a lawyer who is knowledgeable in this area of the law.

We have been contacted by many very smart people who signed these types of agreements without knowing how the agreement would impact their futures and the legal implications.  Your options are greatly limited if you “sign first and ask questions later.”
